Mowing & Growth Control
Oakridge® Kikuyu turf suits a range of mowing heights, making it ideal for home lawns, sports areas, and commercial spaces. It can be kept short for a neat, manicured finish or slightly longer depending on how the lawn is used.
During the active growing season, regular mowing is important to keep the lawn dense and even. It also helps reduce thatch build-up and supports steady, healthy growth.
In cooler months, growth slows down, so mowing frequency can be reduced. Adjusting your mowing schedule with the seasons helps keep your lawn balanced and in good condition year-round.
Watering & Drought Management
Oakridge® Kikuyu turf is drought-tolerant and built to handle Australian conditions. Even so, proper watering remains important for developing deep roots and maintaining turf strength.
During hot or dry weather, deep watering works best. It encourages roots to grow deeper into the soil, improving the lawn’s ability to handle stress and recover quickly.
In cooler seasons or during regular rainfall, less watering is needed. Monitoring soil moisture helps prevent overwatering while keeping your turf in optimal condition.
Research by Dr Donald Loch on drought-tolerant turf preparation supports deep, infrequent watering as the most effective regime for warm-season grasses in Australian conditions.
Fertilisation & Soil Health
To maintain dense, healthy kikuyu turf, apply a balanced fertiliser with adequate nitrogen every 6–8 weeks during the growing season. Regular feeding supports consistent colour, growth, and overall lawn condition.
During winter, reduce fertiliser use — turf growth slows naturally, and overfertilising at this time leads to unnecessary growth and wasted nutrients.
For best results, aerate compacted soil once a year. This improves airflow, water movement, and nutrient access — keeping your lawn performing at its best through every season.
Weed & Pest Prevention
Oakridge® forms a dense, uniform turf layer that naturally suppresses many common lawn weeds. Its thick growth habit leaves little space for weed seeds to establish, making for a cleaner, more consistent lawn.
In newly established areas, some weed control may still be required until the turf is fully covered. Early management reduces competition and supports even establishment.
As a non-seeding kikuyu variety, Oakridge® also attracts fewer seed-feeding birds — helping reduce surface disturbance and keep the lawn looking smooth year-round.
